Isa25 To whom then will you compare Me, or with whom am I equal? says the Holy One. Isa26 Lift up your eyes on high, and consider who has created these things, who brings out their host by number. He calls them all by name by the greatness of His might, for He is strong in power; not one is missing. Isa27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from Jehovah and my judgment is passed over by God? Isa28 Have you not known? Have you not heard, that the eternal God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not grow faint nor weary? His understanding is unsearchable. Isa29 He gives power to the faint; and to him with no strength, He increases might. Isa30 Even the young shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall be feeble and stumble; Isa31 but those who wait upon Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. [A Voice In The Wilderness translation (VW)]
Isaiah is considered the greatest prophet of the Old Testament, consistently preaching the gospel of salvation by faith. Many think of him as the apostle Paul of the Old Testament.
In these final verses of chapter 40 Isaiah asks the Israelites to compare God to an idol, “Whom do I resemble?”, knowing their minds have been weakened by idolatry, and that they will soon go into exile in Babylon. He has already assured them in verse 8, “The grass dries up,
the flowers wither, but the decree of our God is forever reliable.”, and in verses 1-5 that they will ultimately experience the Lord‘s return in the form of Jesus: “…his prize goes before him. 40:11 Like a shepherd he tends his flock; he gathers up the lambs with his arm; he carries them close to his heart; he leads the ewes along.”
Now, in verse 27, he questions their lack of faith in God’s power to affect their lives since their idolatrous minds have become unable to see or experience the enormity of God. Isaiah points out in verse 28 that His strength is eternal and undiminishable, His wisdom vast beyond human understanding, and He desires all people who exhibit the faith to “wait for the Lord’s help…” be lifted up from the mire of earthly sin, as though “…they had eagles wings” and could rise into the spiritual realms.
The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia sums up the importance of Isaiah chapter 40 thru the rest of the book thus:
“The chief claim, therefore, which Isa 40(and the following chapters) make for the God of Israel is His power to direct the history of the world in conformity to a long-predicted and faithfully followed purpose…an exposition, in short, of the Omnipotence, Consistence, and Faithfulness of the Providence of the One True God.”
